"This book (from Lingstar, 732-203-1194
, www.barbaraling.com, 1999, $197) is a terrific resource. Author Barbara
Ling has produced a well-written and realistic overview of Internet recruiting.
Her loose-leaf volumn is good on the basics yet also contains useful specifics
for Internet veterans. Ling plans to sell periodic updates for an additional
$50 a year. (At press time, those were not available for review.) In an
especially smart move, Ling has included a disk with "bookmarks"
that connect to recruiting-related Web sites, saving the reader mucho labor.
The package is pricey but on the whole worth the money. *

Forwarded to me recently by
our publisher for comment, I was skeptical what $197.00 would buy these
days. Worked my way through this comprehensive, 388 page, two volume set
chapter by chapter. Read on...
...
DID I MENTION THIS IS A
GREAT BOOK ?
One thing I really like about
this book is that it is as much reference-desk material as it is training
manual. She spends little time on the expensive Internet services and concentrates
on the wealth of FREE resources available to the Internet recruiter. You
won't even believe how much.
Chapter 3 - Specifics on Search
Engines
This chapter dives right in
headfirst in pointing you to recruiting success on the major search engines.
You can tell she has taken much time to research the proper syntax for
specialized resume searches. Want to search for resume sites - go to Alta
Vista and type in...
... and you are on your way.
You don't even have to remember the syntax. Just look it up. 77 pages of
easy-to-read search engine syntax. This is a great chapter. Alone worth
the price of admission. [ more

"Barbara Ling's business card says she
is the "Sage of Internet Recruiting Techniques" and judging from
the contents of her new looseleaf-bound 260 page offering, it just might
be true. As she states in her intro, "Finding and attracting quality
candidates on the Internet is more than simply logging onto career-related
services or plugging keywords into search engines, hoping to locate that
one crucial individual who would be perfect for a particular job opportunity."
This book was written for:
- Recruiters who want to locate high quality
candidates fast on the Internet
- Recruiters who want their company to be visible
on the Internet
- Recruitesr looking to either build or buy
their own site (the will learn the questions to ask professional designers,
and what makes a good Web site great)
- Recruiters who want to understand what the
Internet can do for them
Just some of the chapters cover:
- How to find candidates on the Internet
- Beginner Candidate Location Skills
- The Art of Job Posting
- Finding Candidates Before Anyone Else
- Your Own Recruiter Web site
- Web Site Designers - They Come in All Shapes
& Sizes
- Finding a Home for Your Recruiting Web site
- How to Market a Recruiter Web Site
- Resources (You name it and it's here)
Most readers know that I have had to be
pushed and prodded into accepting the Internet's often over-hyped promises
but if I were back in the trenches staring at a computer with a fistful
of assignments, I'd definitely make the $197 investment for this information.
To learn more about this offering, call Ms. Ling at (732) 203-1194 or Email
her at: btl@barbaraling.com."

Excellent
review from Staffing Industry Review
"Author and Internet
expert Barbara Ling has just released a handy guide to the Internet, The
Internet Recruiting Edge: Finding, Attracting and Networking Quality Candidates.
The Internet can be a potential gold mine for recruiters, but too often
it more closely resembles a dense, confusing jungle. Many recruiters view
the Internet with an emotion somewhere between fear and awe. Ling, who
comes from the computer side of the spectrum, having worked for AT&T
and as a Unix/NT network administrator, helps recruiters navigate the brave
new world of the Net.
The book is written expressly
for recruiters who want to search the Net, increase their company's visibility
on the Net, build or buy their own site, or just understand what the Net
can do for them. Chapters coach recruiters in finding good candidates,
from beginning candidate location skills and the art of job posting, to
identifying candidates before anyone else and building their own recruiter
Websites. Ling provides a glossary, and the book comes with a computer
disk with more than 600 links of value to recruiters. The book is straightforward
and easy to follow, and Ling writes with insight and humor.
What makes good business
sense in the "real world," Ling explains, often doesn't work
on the Net. For example, mass paper mailing works wonders in direct marketing,
but mass e-mailing is at best useless and at worst, potentially dangerous
(junk e-mailers may receive "flames" or "mail bombs"
in return). Ling, who has been on the Net for more than ten years, passes
on the important lessons of Netiquette that will keep recruiters from appearing
uninformed and inadvertently alientating candidates.
Ling advises recruiters
to consider the Net one more tool in their toolbox. "When you think
of the Internet, think simply, 'Wow! Another great tool!' It's not the
be-all and end-all of recruiting," she continues. "It's not meant
to replace the human touch of personal contact and the interviewing skills....what
it can do is provide you witha means to brilliantly showcase your business
and make it accessible to anyone over the whole planet via a Web site."
Trainer Anthony
Byrne calls The Internet Recruiting Edge "the only accurate schematic
to date of the on-line recruiting dimension." The book certainly contains
much useful information, and can be used by the beginner as well as the
more experienced user. Ling assumes that the average reader's experience
with the Net goes as far as the ability to turn a computer on and connect
to the Net through a service provider. The book is available directly from
Ling at http://www.barbaraling.com
and is priced at $197. For an extra $50/year, the buyer receives two updates
per year, ensuring that the Internet Recruiting Edge remains a timely resource."
